In Their Words: Buyers on Why Keeneland September is The Sale

As the world’s largest Thoroughbred yearling sale, the Keeneland September Sale draws an international cast of buyers lured by an extensive catalog steeped in quality and quantity. In their words, buyers reflect on why September is the premier marketplace.

To me Keeneland is a place where there is quality from start to finish. There is something for everybody. The beauty of Keeneland is they have horses with pedigree from start to finish; it’s 12 days of quality horses. Over the last two years, it’s been wall to wall people in Book 6.
Buyer Randy Miles
That sale is everything… it has always been a very popular sale for us. I have a lot of different clients and some buy in the early part of the sale and some buy later in the sale.
Trainer Mark Casse

September is the major sale the stable concentrates on, and what it provides is value. There are so many horses being sold, looking at those horses individually on a daily basis gives you an opportunity to see something that maybe somebody else misses because it is so difficult to evaluate every single horse.
Trainer Tom Amoss
This is where it happens. The meat and potatoes of what we do is Keeneland September. We have been in business for more than 20 years and if we hadn’t done well at Keeneland September we wouldn’t have been in business that long.
Buyer Ciaran Dunne
It’s the yearling sale on the global sales calendar that you cannot miss if you’re in the horse business. There is something for everybody. There's a broader cross-section of sires, pedigrees, and physical types than you will find under one roof anywhere.
Buyer Nick De Meric

Keeneland is the premier auction in the world when you get down to it. It’s the largest auction in the world. The extra time until the September sale is hugely beneficial to horses. You want to present your horse at its optimum and the extra time to Keeneland means a lot. Young horses change a lot each week.
Buyer Mike Ryan
What makes that sale unique for me is the ability to get value, and that comes from it being such a large sale. Everyone is not on the same horse. I enjoy buying yearlings and have just found you get the best value for the money at that sale.
Trainer Dan Blacker

Keeneland has always been the sale. It’s a two-week sale. Agents really prepare for it. As a buyer they mark it on their calendars; they have to attend. Buyers have taken notice that’s where they need to be. It’s a reload sale. It’s a sale you definitely have to attend.
Buyer Donato Lanni
With the depth of the buyer bench, both internationally and domestically, Keeneland September is by far the most significant yearling sale in the world.
Buyer Jacob West
There are good horses to be had at all price points. I advise my clients to go into every book looking for the best horse in the book.
Buyer David Ingordo

Most clients target Keeneland September because of value. There is enough supply to fit the demand and that keeps the prices fairly honest. There’s something for everyone in that sale.
