September Sale Catalog Steeped With Quality

The 2022 edition of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale scheduled for Sept. 12-24 is noteworthy for its sheer size with more than 4,000 horses cataloged and because it is steeped in quality.

This year’s auction is poised to build on the post-pandemic trajectory that last year resulted in record average and median prices and a record high clearance rate.

The catalog consists of 369 yearlings that are full or half siblings to graded stakes winners, with 123 siblings to Grade 1 winners. Illustrating the sale’s international flavor, 21 yearlings were bred outside North America.

Horse Path

Book 1 Sets the Tone

Keeneland has assembled a two-day Book 1 catalog consisting of 362 of the best bred and conformed yearlings chosen by the sale selection team in consultation with breeders and consignors. Sired by 46 different stallions, the group includes 89 individuals produced from graded stakes winners, 36 of which won Grade 1 stakes. There are siblings to 99 graded stakes winners—of which 50 were Grade 1 winners–cataloged in Book 1.

Book 1 encompasses more highly graded horses than in recent years, so buyers who come into town for only a short period of time will be able to see a larger percentage of really nice horses.
-Keeneland Vice President of Sales Tony Lacy

Exceptional Horses Before Break

Consistent with the format used in 2021, Keeneland has cataloged 1,100 horses during the first week, with a goal of offering buyers a critical mass of top yearlings in the first four days prior to the “dark day” on Friday, Sept. 16, when no sale will be held.

The way to have a healthy market is to have the very best horses sell first, then have the next best horses sell second, then third, then fourth and so on. That’s how you get a good market going.
-Taylor Made Sales Agency Sales Director Frank Taylor
