On-Track Success at the Highest Level

September Sale yearlings not only attract high prices in the sale ring, but live up to their potential where it matters most… on the racetrack. Among the winners of 48 Grade 1 races worldwide in 2021 that went through the September Sale were five Eclipse Awards champions.

The list was topped by Knicks Go, who was the fourth consecutive September Sale graduate to be honored as Horse of the Year. In addition to Knicks Go, an $87,000 yearling purchase from Peter O’Callaghan’s Woods Edge Farm, were 2021 Eclipse champions Corniche (2-year-old male); Echo Zulu (2-year-old female); Jackie’s Warrior (male sprinter); and Malathaat (3-year-old filly).

Breeders Know Value of September Sale

John and Tanya Gunther’s Glennwood Farm has a small but elite broodmare band, annually yielding a crop of yearlings that are aimed at the September Sale. The most prominent name on the honor roll of their September Sale graduates is Horse of the Year and Triple Crown winner Justify, who sold in Book 1 for $500,000 at the 2015 auction.

Keeneland has been our chosen venue for selling yearlings for quite some time now. It’s a one-stop shop where everybody knows they can find something there so you really get such a deep buying bench there.

‘Most Significant Yearling Sale in the World’

Jacob West’s West Bloodstock has recently emerged as one of the leading buyers at all Thoroughbred auctions and led the 2021 September Sale with the purchase of 43 yearlings for more than $16 million as agent for Repole Stable and St. Elias. West has also entered the selling foray as a partner, with Jill Gordon, in Highgate Sales. Together West and Gordon plan to make Highgate Sales a force at the September Sales of the future.

Over 2 years of planning – with matings, raising & preparing horses – culminates in the Keeneland September Sale for commercial breeders & sellers. With the depth of the buyer bench, it's by far the most significant yearling sale in the world.
