War Story, under a patient ride by Javier Castellano, blew by pacesetter Tu Brutus and Sunny Ridge to earn his first graded stakes win with a score in the Brooklyn Invitational (G2) at Belmont June 10. The victory also made War Story a millionaire.
The five-year-old gelding by Northern Afleet sold for $90,000 at the 2013 Keeneland September Yearling Sale. Bred by Jack Swain III in Kentucky and consigned by Brookdale Sales, War Story is out of the Pulpit mare Belle Watling.
War Story sat chilly for the first three-quarters of the 1½-mile test, then came running hard on the outside to pass the pacesetters. He scored by a comfortable 2½ lengths for trainer Jorge Navarro and owners Loooch Racing Stable, Glenn Ellis and Imaginary Stables.
War Story has been on the board 11 times in 21 starts, including five victories, for earnings of $1,154,305.
