Lady Ivanka – Spinaway (G1) winner
Lady Ivanka earned her spot in the gate for the 14 Hands Winery Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies (G1) with an impressive score in the Spinaway (G1) under Irad Ortiz Jr. on Saturday at Saratoga.
A daughter of Tiz Wonderful, Lady Ivanka was bred in Oklahoma by Scott Pierce and consigned to Keeneland’s 2016 September Yearling Sale by Legacy Bloodstock, agent.
Lady Ivanka aired in her debut at Saratoga, taking a maiden special weight by eight lengths on August 9 for trainer Rudy Rodriguez and owners Michael Dubb, Bethlehem Stables, Michael Imperio and Susan Montanye.
In the Spinaway, Ortiz settled Lady Ivanka in third while favorites Separationofpowers and Pure Silver went stride-for-stride through brisk fractions of :22.36 and :45.30. Ortiz swung Lady Ivanka four-wide in the lane, passed the pacesetters and had enough in the tank to fend off Maya Malibu, who found room to get through on the rail. The winning margin was three-quarters of a length.
“I got a perfect trip,” Ortiz said. “I broke out of there and just sat there and waited. We were clear on the turn and when I asked her she was there for me. She was ready. (Trainer) Rudy (Rodriguez) did a good job with her. Her last race was impressive and she did it in a good way. Now here we are in a Grade 1 and she did it.”
