Illuminant appeared to be happy to be back on home turf when she took the $200,000 Monrovia (G2) at Santa Anita on May 27. The victory marked her second graded stakes score, and her sixth win in 14 outings. Five of those six wins have come at Santa Anita.

Sycamore Hall Farm in Pennsylvania bred Illuminant, a 5-year-old daughter of Quality Road consigned to Keeneland’s 2013 September Yearling Sale by Eaton Sales, agent. She sold to Don R. Graham for $32,000 and now races for Eclipse Thoroughbred Partners, Head of Plains Partners and SF Racing.

In the Monrovia, Illuminant was seventh of eight under Flavien Prat during the early going of the 6½-furlong grass test but got rolling on the outside off the turn to win by a half-length.

Illuminant captured the Gamely (G1) over the Santa Anita turf this time last year before getting time off until March, when she won the Wishing Well Stakes, also at Santa Anita. She ran in the Coolmore Jenny Wiley (G1) at Keeneland in April before returning to her home base at Santa Anita for trainer Michael McCarthy.
