American Anthem made it look like a walk in the park when he captured the Woody Stephens (G2) with all ease at Belmont Park on June 10. It was the second consecutive graded stakes score for the son of Bodemeister, who won the Lazaro Barrera (G3) at Santa Anita in May.
The colt sold for $180,000 as a yearling during Book 1 of Keeneland’s 2015 September Yearling Sale from the consignment of Select Sales, agent. He races for breeder WinStar Farm and additional owners China Horse Club International, Head of Plains Partners and SF Racing.
Sent off the 9-5 choice in the field of 11 sophomores, American Anthem and Mike Smith sat just off the pace in the early going, seized the lead as they turned for home and had plenty left in the tank, posting a 3¼-length win in 1:22.14.
The Bob Baffert trainee has now won three of his six lifetime races. He broke his maiden first out at Del Mar in December and kicked off the year with a second-place finish in the Sham (G3) at Santa Anita in January.
American Anthem is out of the A.P. Indy mare Indy's Windy, who was a $1.1 million yearling purchase at the 2005 September Sale.
